What Washer Repair Covers

Quick answer

Washer repair in Sunnyvale, CA covers top-load and front-load washing machines, stacked washer-dryer units and laundry centers. Technicians replace drain pumps, inlet valves, lid and door locks, belts, drive motors, shock absorbers and suspension springs, door boot seals and control boards, and they clear the clogs that cause most no-drain calls.

A washer combines water, electricity and a heavy spinning drum, and each of those creates its own wear. Pumps collect lint, coins and small socks. Door locks and lid switches are opened and closed thousands of times. Shock absorbers soften with every unbalanced load. The good news is that most washer repairs replace a single part, and the cabinet and tub can last many more years. For the matching appliance, see our dryer repair guide.

Signs Your Washer Needs Service

  • Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle.
  • Won’t spin, or clothes come out soaking wet.
  • Loud banging or shaking during spin, or the washer moves across the floor.
  • Leaks from the front, the back or under the machine.
  • Won’t fill, fills slowly or fills with only hot or only cold water.
  • Door or lid won’t lock or unlock, or the cycle won’t start.
  • Musty smell or black residue in a front-loader’s door seal.
  • Error codes that return after you reset the washer.
03

What You Can Safely Check First

Unplug the washer before checking anything inside it. Then:

  • Clean the pump filter. On most front-loaders it’s behind a small panel at the bottom front. Put down towels and a shallow pan first; it will release water.
  • Check the drain hose for kinks behind the machine, and make sure it isn’t pushed too far into the standpipe.
  • Open both water valves fully and look at the inlet hose screens for debris.
  • Level the washer. Adjust the feet so it doesn’t rock, and redistribute heavy loads like bedding.
  • Run a cleaning cycle with a washer cleaner, and wipe and dry the door boot.
Rubber hoses can burst

Old rubber inlet hoses are a common cause of flooded laundry rooms. Replace them with braided stainless hoses, and turn off the valves if you’ll be away for a while.

Front-Load vs. Top-Load Problems

Front-loaders use less water and spin faster, which makes them efficient but also more sensitive. Their door boot traps moisture and lint, their pump filter needs regular cleaning, and their tub bearings work hard. Top-loaders with an agitator are simple and durable; high-efficiency top-loaders with a wash plate spin faster and balance loads electronically, which can lead to more off-balance stops.

Stacked washer-dryer units are common in Sunnyvale townhomes and apartments, often tucked into a closet. They’re harder to reach, so a technician may need to unstack them for some repairs. Tell us it’s a stacked or compact unit when you call. Shared laundry rooms in larger buildings are usually the property manager’s responsibility; in your own unit, check your lease.

06

Water, Detergent and Long Life

Most washer trouble starts with what goes in. Using too much detergent, or regular detergent in a high-efficiency machine, leaves residue that feeds odors and can confuse sensors. Mineral deposits from hard water build up on heating elements and valves over time. Overloading the drum strains the suspension and bearings. Use HE detergent in HE washers, measure it, and wash bulky items like comforters on their own.

If the laundry room is in a garage or next to a bedroom, put a drain pan with a drain line under the washer, and consider a water leak sensor. If the dryer next to the washer is slow, the vent is the first thing to check; and if your dishwasher has been leaving residue too, the problem may be the water rather than either machine. Our repair-or-replace guide helps when the washer is getting old.

07

Cost, Timing and Repair or Replace

Most washer repairs are a single part: a drain pump, a door lock, an inlet valve, a belt or a set of shock absorbers. Those are usually moderate repairs and often finished in one visit. Control boards cost more, and tub bearing replacement on a front-loader is a big job because the whole tub has to come apart; on an older machine, that’s the repair where replacing usually makes more sense. A technician can tell you which part failed and what else looks worn before you decide.

Before the visit, drain what you can (a front-loader’s pump filter has a small drain hose for this), remove the wet clothes, and clear a path to the machine. Stacked units and washers in tight closets take longer to pull out, so mention it when you book. If the washer is in an upstairs laundry room or a condo above someone else, turning off the water valves until the repair is done is cheap insurance against a second leak.

Brands, Models and Smart Washers

Local technicians repair washers from Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, Samsung, LG, Electrolux, Frigidaire, Bosch, Miele and Speed Queen, among others. Each brand has its own common failures: some front-loaders are known for door boot and bearing wear, some high-efficiency top-loaders for lid locks and suspension rods, and many newer models for sensor and control board faults. A technician who works on your brand regularly recognizes the pattern quickly.

Smart washers with Wi-Fi and app control add a layer of electronics, but they fail mechanically the same way older machines do. If yours shows an error code in the app or on the display, write it down before resetting. Codes for drain, unbalanced load, door lock and water supply problems narrow the diagnosis before the technician arrives. We’re an independent referral service, not affiliated with any washer manufacturer.

FAQ

Washer Repair Questions

Why won’t my washer drain?

Usually a clogged pump filter, an item caught in the drain hose or pump, or a failed drain pump. On front-loaders, clean the filter at the bottom front. If the pump hums but no water moves, it’s likely blocked or failed.

Why is my washer shaking so much?

An unbalanced load, an unlevel washer or worn shock absorbers and suspension springs. If leveling and rearranging the load don’t help, the suspension parts are likely worn.

How do I get rid of the smell in my front-load washer?

Clean the door boot and pump filter, run a hot cleaning cycle with a washer cleaner, use HE detergent sparingly, and leave the door and detergent drawer open between loads to dry.

Is it worth fixing a washer?

Usually, if it’s under about eight to ten years old and the problem is a pump, valve, lock, belt or suspension part. Bearing failures on older machines are the repair where many owners choose a new washer instead.

Can you repair stacked washer-dryers?

Yes. Stacked and compact units are common in Sunnyvale townhomes and apartments. Some repairs require unstacking them, which takes a little longer.

My washer door won’t open. What should I do?

Wait a few minutes after the cycle; the lock releases on a delay. If water is still in the drum, the washer won’t unlock until it drains. Don’t force the door; a technician can drain the washer and replace a failed lock.
