What Dishwasher Repair Covers

Quick answer

Dishwasher repair in Sunnyvale, CA covers built-in, drawer and panel-ready dishwashers. Technicians fix leaks, drain and wash pump failures, water inlet valves, float switches, door latches and gaskets, heating elements, spray arms and control boards, and they clear the clogs in filters, drain hoses and air gaps that cause most no-drain calls.

Dishwashers live in a hard environment: hot water, detergent, food debris and steam, all inside a sealed tub that has to stay sealed. Leaks often come from a worn door gasket, a cracked hose or a pump seal. Poor cleaning usually traces back to a clogged filter, blocked spray arm holes or water that isn’t hot enough. Because a slow leak can damage the floor and cabinets, it’s worth fixing early. For other kitchen appliances, see oven and stove repair.

Signs Your Dishwasher Needs Service

  • Water on the floor in front of or under the dishwasher.
  • Standing water in the bottom after a cycle.
  • Dishes dirty or gritty, or a film on glasses.
  • Won’t fill, or you hear it hum without water.
  • Won’t start, or the door won’t latch.
  • Dishes don’t dry or the cycle runs much longer.
  • Bad smell from the tub.
  • Error code or blinking lights that return after a reset.
03

What You Can Safely Check First

  • Clean the filter. Most modern dishwashers have a removable filter in the bottom of the tub; rinse it monthly.
  • Check the drain hose and air gap. If there’s an air gap on the sink, clean it. If you recently installed a garbage disposal, make sure the knockout plug was removed.
  • Run the hot water at the sink before starting a cycle so the dishwasher fills with hot water.
  • Clear the spray arms. Remove them and rinse out any seeds, glass or debris in the holes.
  • Look at the door gasket for tears, food buildup or a gap, and check that the dishwasher is level.
Stop a leak fast

Close the dishwasher supply valve, usually under the kitchen sink, and unplug the unit or switch off its breaker. Water left under the dishwasher can damage flooring and the cabinet base.

Panel-Ready, Drawer and Quiet European Models

Many remodeled Silicon Valley kitchens have quiet European-style dishwashers that dry with condensation instead of a heater, so dishes, especially plastics, come out a little damp by design. Using rinse aid and opening the door after the cycle helps. Panel-ready models are hidden behind a cabinet front, and dishwasher drawers split the tub into two independent drawers; both need extra care to remove and reinstall.

Most dishwashers also have a leak protection system: a float or sensor in the base that shuts the machine down if water collects there. If yours suddenly won’t run and shows a leak code, there may be water in the base. For built-in suites and premium brands, see high-end appliance repair.

06

Detergent, Rinse Aid and Water

Most cleaning complaints come down to a few habits. Scrape plates but don’t pre-rinse them completely; modern detergents need some food soil to work. Use fresh detergent, because old powder clumps. Keep rinse aid filled for drying and spot-free glasses. Load so the spray arms can turn and nothing blocks the detergent door.

Mineral content varies across Silicon Valley water supplies, and hard water leaves white film and scale on glasses and inside the machine. A dishwasher cleaner every month or two and a rinse aid help. If the film wipes off with vinegar, it’s mineral; if it doesn’t, the glass may be etched, which is permanent. Cost, Timing and What to Expect

Common dishwasher repairs include drain pumps, inlet valves, door latches and switches, door gaskets, float switches and hoses, and most are finished in one visit. Wash motors and control boards are bigger repairs. A cracked or rusted-through tub is usually the point where replacing makes more sense, especially on a budget model. Panel-ready and drawer dishwashers take more time to remove and reinstall, which adds to labor.

Before the technician arrives, empty the dishwasher, bail out any standing water with a cup and towels, and clear the cabinet under the sink so they can reach the water valve and drain connection. If the dishwasher shut itself off with a leak code, don’t keep restarting it; there may be water in the base pan that needs to be found and fixed first.

A slow leak can do more damage than a broken dishwasher, so check under the front edge and in the cabinet beside it from time to time. Soft or swollen flooring, a musty smell or water stains on the cabinet side are signs it’s been leaking for a while. For other kitchen appliances, see our Sunnyvale appliance technicians overview.

Brands Technicians See Most

Bosch, KitchenAid, Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Miele, Thermador, Fisher & Paykel and Frigidaire dishwashers are all common in Silicon Valley kitchens. European-style models tend to be quiet, use less water and dry with condensation; American designs often use a heated dry. Both have filters that need regular cleaning, and both protect against leaks with a float or sensor in the base. Error codes differ by brand, so write down the code and the model number before you call.

If your dishwasher is under the manufacturer’s warranty, start with the manufacturer. Out of warranty, an experienced independent technician is the usual choice. We’re an independent referral service and aren’t affiliated with any appliance brand.

FAQ

Dishwasher Repair Questions

Why is there water in the bottom of my dishwasher?

Usually a clogged filter, drain hose or air gap, or a failed drain pump. Clean the filter first. If you hear the pump hum but water doesn’t move, it may be blocked or failed.

Why is my dishwasher leaking?

Common causes are a worn or dirty door gasket, an unlevel dishwasher, a loose or cracked hose underneath, a pump seal or the wrong detergent causing suds. Turn off the water and call if you can’t see an obvious cause.

Why are my dishes still dirty?

Clogged spray arms or filter, water that isn’t hot enough, a weak wash pump, old detergent or overloading. Cleaning the filter and spray arms fixes many cases.

Is it worth repairing a dishwasher?

Usually, if it’s under about seven or eight years old and the problem is a pump, valve, latch or gasket. Built-in premium models are worth repairing longer.

Why don’t my dishes dry?

Many quiet models dry by condensation and leave some moisture, especially on plastics. Add rinse aid and open the door after the cycle. If drying suddenly got worse, the heating element or vent may have failed.

Can you repair panel-ready dishwashers?

Yes. Panel-ready and drawer dishwashers take a little more time to remove and reinstall. Mention the brand and model when you call.

Why does my dishwasher smell bad?

Food trapped in the filter, the drain hose or the door gasket. Clean the filter, wipe the gasket and run a hot cycle with a dishwasher cleaner. If the smell is like sewage, the drain connection or air gap may be letting water back in.

Can a dishwasher leak damage my floor?

Yes. Slow leaks under a dishwasher can soften subflooring and damage the cabinet base before anyone notices. Check under the front edge from time to time and fix leaks quickly.
